(Minneapolis, MN) – South Central College will give demonstrations of grain bin and trench rescue at a Minneapolis exposition next week.

The American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition 2019 will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center Monday, May 20th – Wednesday, May 22nd.

The demos are a new addition to the conference, added because of the 30 grain bin entrapments that occur.  Nearly half of those cases end in death for the victim.  Most happen when a worker enters a bin to loosen crusted, spoiled, or frozen grain while the equipment is running.

Trench collapse accidents are seldom survivable.  OSHA statistics show accidents usually occur with excavation work on farming, water, sewer, pipeline, communications and power-line equipment maintenance, repair and construction.

In southern Minnesota, a Lamberton man died in a grain bin accident last May after becoming submerged.  Just a month earlier, a man was rescued from a grain bin near Courtland.  And in March, a grain company employee was rescued after falling into a grain bin in Olivia.

SCC’s demonstrations will be held at the following times:

  • Grain bin demos: 10-10:45 a.m. and 2:30-3:15 p.m.
