(New Ulm, MN) – A Mankato man is accused of waiting outside of a New Ulm apartment for over three hours to attack his former friend with a baseball bat.

Jesse James Cowing, 40, has been charged with felony counts of 1st-degree burglary and 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

Court documents filed in Brown County Court Monday allege that Cowing began waiting outside the victim’s South Minnesota Street apartment at 6 a.m. on August 18th.

The victim told police that Cowing began swinging a baseball bat at him when he was taking his dog out at 9:40 a.m.  He alleges Cowing hit him with the bat during a struggle that moved into his apartment, as Cowing yelled that the victim had “f**ked him over.”

Police say the victim suffered a laceration on his shoulder and a red mark on his lower back that was consistent with being struck by a bat.  Investigators noted white paint the same color as the victim’s apartment door on the bat, according to the complaint.

Cowing admitted to police he had been “heated” when he began waiting outside the apartment that morning.  He alleges the victim had stored the baseball bat by the door and pulled the bat on him.  Cowing said the victim hit him on the side of the head with the baseball bat before pulling him into the apartment during a struggle over the bat.  He told police he was also struck in the mouth and calf as he crawled out of the apartment.

Cowing also faces misdemeanor charges of 5th-degree assault and disorderly conduct.
