Court: Dairy expansion nixed, citing climate change

The court reversed the permit granted by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to Daley Farms of Lewiston in Winona County which wants to expand it milking operation from 1,500 to 3,000 cows. Environmentalists say the expanded farm would create more than 46 million gallons of manure each year.

The Star Tribune says both sides agree the court’s decision raises the possibility that the state could start considering climate change effects when permitting large-scale dairy farms.

Daley family attorney Matthew Berger says they haven’t decided whether to ask the state Supreme Court to take the case.
