Will Eagle Lake Eliminate Its Police Department?….

The City Council in Eagle Lake will hold a special meeting on Monday night to discuss the 2018 budget, including one plan that would mean the elimination of the police department.

By eliminating the police department and having law enforcement services covered by the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office and a City Community Service Officer, Eagle Lake would save an estimated $67,000 next year.

The proposed organizational changes would also include eliminating the City Administrator position and cutting the number of full time Public Works staff down to 1, as the city moves “toward a fully embraced model of contractual services.”

Council Member John Ries says consolidation of services between communities at some point is possible, but the proposal to be discussed Monday “borders on insanity” and he will never support it.
