Authorities rescued a shivering toddler clinging to the body of her drowned mother in flooded  Southeast Texas after she drowned trying to carry her child to safety.

The Associated Press is reporting her vehicle was stuck in a parking lot with Harvey pounding the area with rain at a rate of up to 2 inches an hour.

Witnesses say the woman was swept away by the current of a flood drainage canal close to the lot.

The shivering toddler was clinging to her floating, deceased mother, a half mile down stream when the fire rescue team was finally able to catch up to them. Attempts to revive the mother were unsuccessful.

The child was listed in stable condition at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.
