Raising the legal age to purchase tobacco locally to 21 could happen in September…

Another step is expected to be taken tonight toward raising the legal age to purchase tobacco locally to 21.

The North Mankato City Council meets this evening and will consider setting a public hearing on the proposal for August 21st.

The Mankato City Council is expected to hold its public hearing later this month as well. Mankato’s initial ordinance called for criminalizing tobacco possession and purchases by those ages 18 to 20, but it has since decided against that.

If approved by both cities, the higher tobacco purchase age in Mankato-North Mankato could be law by late September. Tht would drive young adults who want cigarettes or chew – and their money – to other nearby places like Eagle Lake and Southbend, which reportedly are not planning to raise the tobacco age in their towns
