New Ulm K-9 Bites 1 Year Old Girl On National Night Out

The annual National Night Out event in New Ulm is aimed at helping police take a bite out of crime, but this year it was a child that felt the teeth.

The New Ulm Police Department’s new K9 officer “Booker” bit a one-year-old girl during the gathering Monday night in German Park.

The girl’s mother says a friend was holding her at the time and approached the dog and his handler, and was in the process of asking if they could pet him when the dog lunged and bit the girl in the leg. The girl was taken to the hospital, but did not suffer any serious injuries.

Booker just joined the New Ulm Police Department this past spring and graduated from K9 training school in June. Booker replaced K9 officer Juneau, who retired after 7 years of service.
